Denver Piano Tuning

88 notes, 220 strings — all in harmony, with skill and precision.

A piano holds roughly 220 strings under more than 20 tons of combined tension, and that tension shifts constantly with Colorado's temperature and humidity swings. Tuning resets every string to its correct pitch so your piano plays in tune with itself — and with every other instrument — at standard A-440.

Denver Piano Service has tuned pianos across the Front Range for over 45 years. Our technicians tune by ear and verify electronically, the same standard used to prepare concert instruments, whether your piano lives in a living room, a church, a school, or on a stage.

What a tuning includes

  • A full aural + electronic tuning to A-440 (international standard pitch)
  • Unison, octave, and temperament refinement across all 88 notes
  • A quick health check of the action, pedals, and obvious issues
  • Honest, upfront pricing discussed before any work begins
  • The option to schedule your next visit so your piano never drifts far

How often should a Denver piano be tuned?

Most home pianos should be tuned at least twice a year — once after the dry winter heating season and once after summer. Teaching studios, schools, churches, and performance instruments are often tuned quarterly or before each event.

Colorado's dry climate is hard on pianos: low humidity shrinks the soundboard and pulls strings flat. A piano kept on a regular schedule holds its tuning far better than one tuned only occasionally.

Pitch raise vs. standard tuning

If a piano has gone years without service, it has usually dropped well below A-440. Bringing it back up changes the tension across the whole frame, which immediately pulls it out of tune again — so it needs a pitch raise (a rough tuning to get it close) followed by a fine tuning.

We'll always tell you up front whether a pitch raise is needed and what it costs, so there are no surprises.

Frequently asked questions

How much does piano tuning cost in Denver?

A standard tuning is a flat, upfront rate we confirm before we start. If your piano has dropped well below pitch and needs a pitch raise, that's typically about one-and-a-half times a standard tuning — still cheaper than two separate visits. We quote it before any work begins.

How long does a piano tuning take?

A standard tuning usually takes about 1 to 1.5 hours. A pitch raise plus fine tuning takes longer, since it's effectively two passes.

Can a piano be tuned after 20 years?

Almost always, yes. It will likely need a pitch raise and possibly a follow-up tuning to re-stabilize, and we'll check for any repairs first — but most long-neglected pianos can be brought back to pitch and sound beautiful again.

Why does my piano go out of tune even when I don't play it?

Tuning drift is caused mostly by humidity and temperature changes, not by playing. In Colorado's dry climate, even an untouched piano needs regular tuning to stay at pitch.
