Piano Tuning & Regulation

Can a Piano Be Tuned After 20 Years?

Almost always, yes. Here's what to expect when bringing a long-neglected piano back to life.

The short answer: yes

A piano that hasn't been tuned in 20 years can almost always be brought back to pitch and made to sound beautiful again. We see it constantly. What it takes depends on the piano's condition and how far it has drifted.

What to expect

  • It has almost certainly dropped well below pitch, so it will need a pitch raise before a fine tuning will hold.
  • It may need a follow-up tuning a few weeks later to re-stabilize, then a normal schedule from there.
  • We'll check for any repairs first — sticky keys, broken strings, worn parts — and quote anything needed up front.

Is it worth it?

Usually, absolutely — especially for a quality or sentimental instrument. A long-neglected piano often just needs attention, not replacement. We'll give you an honest assessment before you spend a dollar.
